You are mistaken! A disk is a complete drive, which may or may not be divided into partitions. A hard drive is connected to a port on the motherboard. The ports are numbered 0, 1, 2, etc., and the disk number will match the port number. However, other storage devices can also have a disk number. A hidden partition has no label (letter).
I have had the same problem that blue boy reported above. The other day my computer hung on startup, it didn't even get to the fancy Asus startup screen (i forget what its called but thats when you can enter the bios). It was just a blank screen. This has happened occasionally before but without any effect, I just restart the comp and its fine afterwards.
However this time I checked the event log and noticed an 'Event 11' which said that 'The driver detected a controller error on DeviceHarddisk3DR3'. The only thing is, I don't have a hard disk 3, or a drive 3 of any kind, at least not according to Disk Management.
One a couple of occasions I had this error before it was on a hard disk 2, which was the USB stick I had plugged in at the time. However on this occasion there were no USB sticks plugged in.
